Not used a safety razor for nearly 40 years, used disposables, so not really in a position to compare with others. After being annoyed at the 'modern' plastic razors with there obscenely overprices blades, I'd decided to return to the standard safety razor that I started with when I was a teenager. What a delightful change 'back to the future' it has been!
This Merkur is solid, balanced and is very comfortable to use. When I was using safety razors I'd always had a butterfly style but I much prefer this sturdy screwing handle/head design! The blade is held precisely as intended in the razor.
My first shave with the Merkur felt as a shave should. A feeling I've not had since moving away from the safety razor decades ago. I shall never go back to the substandard, overpriced, PR'ed multi bladed, plastic so called 'modern' razor again!
Reganal Perrin who worked at 'Groomtech' (see bbc.co.uk/programmes/b00k6pkz for reference) was right. Groomtech's 10 blade razor isn't possible and, if it were, it wouldn't provide a better shave.
In my experience using a safety razor requires very little change in shaving technique than a 'modern' plastic razor. I say this in light of the fact I've not used a safety razor for more than 30 years until using this Merkur.
Those who have never experienced the satisfaction of a razor such as on this site, I can recommend giving it a go if you're in anyway interested. Chances are you will stick with the classic, precise, ecological and cost effective safety razor.

Nice shaver and made the transition from disposable a straightforward one. Nice weight, but the handle s too short. My son likes it, though, so I ll give it to him and buy another with a longer handle. Excellent service, though.
Not my first DE razor but immediately became a favorite. Very well balanced*** the workmanship and quality of materials are excellent - yet, very simple. The handle is a bit short to my taste, but overall I d give it top rating.

I cannot believe that I have reached 40 without ever using a traditional safety razor, and what a shock. Seemingly lethally sharp as compared to the dross of plastic that I have been used to (Sensors and Mach 3s) this gave quite simply the best shave I have ever had but still remarkably easy to use.

the razor is far better than the disposable razors available by far, just find out how to use it properly i looked on utube and read the advice on traditional shaving web site. the razor feels solid and great quilaty. I find the handle would be better being a bit longer for my hand but that is my fault for not picking the same razor with the longer handle. very happy with this razor and will not go back to disposables.

I purchased this razor based on the wonderful reviews it has received. I was not disappointed. This razor replaced one I lost on vacation, and has exceeded any previous razor in performance. I could not find this razor in the USA, and was lucky to find The Traditional Shaving Company. I will never purchase another razor again.

Great Razor. I own 6 DE razors - this is my favourite.
I threw away my old safety razors about 20 years ago and now regret it. I have been getting fded up with various multi bladed razors that cost a fortune and last for a shorter and shorter time, so decided to try a safety razor again. Wow! just as good as the best multi bladed razor from the big companies and blades have no problem lasting a week. I m sold on the Classic 33C but might still buy the nickel version for when I sail with all that salt water about.
