Beautiful razor but unconvinced by the shave quality

I’ve been using this for some years. It is really well made and looks fantastic. I like the ability to tailor the “closeness”. However it is slightly too heavy for my tastes. More importantly I am not convinced by the shape of the head which is quite thick. The method for changing the blades is not optimal.

The look and feel of this razor is quite something - reminiscent of a submarine with a sturdy adjustment mechanism and a locking head that feels secure with no play. In terms of the shave, this is my first DE razor and I'm thoroughly impressed with the closeness of shave that I've been able to achieve with this. I love a close shave and now I can get one closer than I've ever had before even in those tricky areas like the chin, which always seemed to remain like a brillo pad despite multiple passes; all this and no razor burn! The adjustment mechanism on this is fantastic and so far I've been using 3.5 for the first pass with the grain followed by the mildest setting for going against the grain. Couldn't be happier with this razor. Quick delivery with some bonus goodies was appreciated too.

I like adjustable safety razors.
Futur is very well engineered. Looks so cool. Heavy and well balanced.
I was afraid not to be able to shave daily with Futur. (Because i nearly always shave every morning. ) At the setting 1 you can have very comfortable shaves daily routin.
Futur has became my one of the favourite safety razor . But Progress is still Number One.
If Futur would be a little smaller, it could be the greatest safety razor.
Do not waste time, order one and try!

I have given this a couple of months before posting this review. The Futur is my first DE razor which I bought on the basis of it' s adjustability. Up to two months ago I had used a cartridge razor for as long as I can remember and I am not exactly a youngster. Increasingly I had become dissatisfied with the shave quality from the cartridge system and decided to give DE shaving a bash.
I have not been disappointed and wish I had discovered this years ago. Starting on a setting of 1, I had a couple of very small nicks for the first two weeks whilst I got the hang of it, since then it has been a revelation producing a closer shave than I have ever had and with no razor burn.
The razor itself is reassuringly heavy as far as I am concerned and superbly well built. Having read a few reviews I have noticed some negative comments about fitting and removing blades and the difficulties about shaving difficult areas under the nose etc. I find the blade replacement easy and have not personally had too much difficulty shaving in the hard to access areas.
I understand that I am new to all this and can only comment on this razor but having wet shaved for decades with a cartridge system this has worked out to be an inspired purchase for me. I do of course understand that there may well be many DE razors out there which perform equally well but I certainly have no regrets buying the Futur.

I'm going to part company with the majority view of this razor. Let's start with the price and what you get for your money. At £50.00 it's not cheap so what do you get? Well, it's true that it is of a good weight and a seemingly decent build. But that's where it starts and ends for me. The head itself is large, clumsy, too thick. When shaving in those difficult to access places on your top lip under your nose you need something that feels less like a sledgehammer and more like an open blade. It's just too big. My next dislike is the push-fit blade / head arrangement. You need to be sure to line up the blade and ensure it is centred before giving the head a final firm push to keep everything in place. My third complaint is the adjuster. Nothing wrong with the mechanism, it's just that the engraved numerals are not deep enough and they could do with a bit of colour to pick out the setting. I can't be the only one who stands there bleary eyed at 6am trying to make out the setting. When I compare this to my 40 year old Gillette butterfly opening adjustable, I'm afraid the two just don't compare. Sadly I feel that I have wasted £50 on a white elephant that is more likely to sit in my bathroom cabinet than on a shaving stand.

The style is truly stunning and so far is the best looking razor I have found. However, I wish the top wasn't so prominently domed, but the weight is nice. Having said this, I can get an incredibly smooth shave with my Persona blade. Also, I'm not a fan of the Merkur blade that came with it (why not 5 blades free?), but that is a minor point. If you buy this you won't be disappointed, but it's not the dream razor I would like it to be. If they ever release a matt chrome 34C, then I am swopping, but until that day this is my go to razor.

This razor is a great shaving tool. Great weight, makes short work of my beard, love it, paired with my favourite blade its a real smooth experience.

Well now I understand it! I understand why DE shaving has so many fans and why once you've made the switch and have a decent razor,you'll never go back to those Mach 3 days.This is my first,quality DE razor after having bought a cheap and cheerful just to get used to the concept.I researched properly and for some time to try and make sure that I picked up the right one for me and The Futur's adjustable facility swung it in the end,I wanted something that would be relatively gentle on a day or two's growth but which had the turbo charge for those days when it was four or five.It's actually quite difficult to explain just how good this thing is,the difference is incredible,absolute night and day! Something else I now understand is why proponents of DE shaving talk about how shaving becomes a pleasure,rather than a chore - turns out that's absolutely spot on! So far,I've found that for most shaves this razor will cope easily at between settings 2-3 which is awesome because that still leaves me 4-6 should I ever need them! Wilkinson Sword blades so far have been excellent but I'm going to sample others along the way.All in all,I recommend it highly for everyone from those,like me,just making a start,to those that have been shaving this way for years.

enjoying shaving for the first time in years!! couldnt remember when i used a DE razor the last time,,,,,, hood winked into using modern razors BUT now back to real shaving experiance.

Read a review on www.talkshaving.co.uk and knew i wanted one. Lovely weight to the razor, Brilliant audio feedback and feels very premium. Be careful though as setting 1 is aggresive. Setting 6 feels like your shaving with a laser!

I have a Merkur 34C which I love and which I've never cut myself with. So I thought I'd upgrade to this beauty. Unfortunately *every* time I use it I get cuts - some of them really bad. I'm not new to DEs; I just don't get along with this one. Shame because it is really pretty. Also, the whole top loader thing is a pretty bad design tho.

I don't use it at all anymore. Not worth the *deep* cuts. I'd say at least see it in the flesh before buying. It's massive.

I have a basic De razor, which was my first safety razor. The futur is leagues ahead and a superb shave. The weight is perfect and the ability to adjust the blade means that I now get a far improved shave. Superb very pleased

Surprisingly heavy, probably the closest and best shave I have ever had (bit late discovering this at 63!), also extremely well engineered.

First up, my second order and again superb service from TSC - WELL DONE! As for the razor, I already have a Merkur 34C, which is a fantastic little razor, however, I fancied an adjustable and decided to go for the Futur BC. Not had it long but my first impressions are Solid, Substantial and Great Quality. As mentioned elsewhere, under the nose is the hardest part to master! I am currently trying different blades and am using a Feather blade which is giving a great shave. Have not found any issues with it being slippery to hold or hard to change the blade. All in all, an excellent razor and I am very happy! Thank you TSC!

This is quite the best razor I have ever owned.

It is a classic harmony of precision engineering and ergonomics and if used correctly will provide unbeatable results.

The razor allows for 6 levels of adjustment so some experimenting is needed to get the optimal results.

The Merkur blades don't suit my beard but Feather blades do and are the sharpest I've found.

I have used Merkur for years. A single blade used to last me 4 days with common or garden razors; with a Merkur I found one blade lasted months. So, it is environmentally friendly. This latest purchase was a replacement for a Merkur I bought decades ago, so the razor lasts as well! I have been converted for life.
I've also recommended one to the wife of a friend with particularly intractable facial hair whch needs shaving twice a day so he can expect one in his stocking next Xmas.

Nice, heavy. Feels like the quality it is. My first foray into a saftey razor but it s not too different from my gillette wet shaves. Does feel more of a ritual I guess. Nice quality and the girls won t be pinching it to do their legs as I said it would cut them!

A wonderfulweight a feel of quality with this which is my first D/E razor. I wasn t sure if it would be too heavy based on other reviews, but not at all - reasuring is how I would describe it. So far I have only tried with the supplied Merkur blade but very pleased with the results. I nice close shave with 2 passes and no cuts or burn. Just what I ve been after for such a long time!

Love this razor. I started off with a cheap Edwin Jagger DE Razor just to see how I got on with it, then went on to purchase this Futur after watching a chap using it on You Tube. I ve been quite daring with this and got it on No. 3 setting, although I have nicked myself once or twice. This razor oozes quality unlike the toys that Gillette make and the price on here was the cheapest I d found on the internet.

I love this razor. Adjustable, allows you to drive your shave. I lower the balde exposure when doing against the grain passes, this allows for the smoothest shave without irritation.

Wow! I d read a few review about how good this razor is and I m not disappointed. Well balanced and the shave is incredible from a single blade.

First, this is my first DE, so you have to take that into account. The finishing is excellent, easy to open, adjust and use. I don t think it s too big, but it does take some practice to shave under the nose.

It s the sort of razor James Dyson would have made if the Germans hadn t beaten him to it! A DE safety razor whose performance is the equal of Gillette s Mach 3 system. I just wish I d bought it sooner.

This Futur not only feels great, but has also given me the best shave I ve ever had.

The safety razor out of collection by far, outstanding engineering from solingen Germany. I love the satin chrome finish and it s a dream to use. The razor is well balanced and built to last a lifetime, resulting in smooth ultra close shave! In short chuck away those expensive multi blade cartridge junk and make a switch by to the old traditional shaving techniques.

Having read so many good reports and reviews about this razor i couldnt wait to get it unwrapped and into action. Bought it in connection with a sample razor pack and again, i have to thank all the great advice that is online because the blades are different and need careful application, feather is not for my skin type, even with the razor set to 1,i was cut to shreds on every stroke, I have ended up very happy using Wilkinson s blades set to 1.5 on the razor, using proraso pre shave lotion/cream and then applying proraso shaving soap, not a nick or cut in sight and a great shave every time. Razor is a good weight and quite well balanced, great purchase and best price on this site i could find, thanks again guy s.

I found the razor itself excellent and the OE blade perfect, I have since purchased more Merkur Plastinum blades.

This is the first time i ve ordered from your site, and it was a pleasure. I ordered on a Friday morning, the razor arrived the next day. Brilliant service! As for the razor itself, it is well built, and feels very solid and sturdy in the hand. I was worried that it might prove to be too slippy whilst wet, but this hasnt proven to be the case. Iv just used it for the first time and can honestly say that it is the finest, closest shave i ve ever had! Miles better then my previous Gillete cartridge system, and also very easy - no nicks or cuts, very smooth. Get this razor!

This razor, together with Feather Hi-Stainless Razor Blades, gave me a better shave than with a well known 4 bladed razor. Doesn t clog up and easy to clean. Well worth investing in.

I don t normally write reviews for products but feel I must for the Merkur Futur.This razor is quality, easily the best I have ever owned,the weight is perfect for me allowing the razor itself to do the cutting.I use shaving oil then lather up,take my time and use two passes, with a touch up for difficult areas.I have the setting on 1aThe blade supplied with this razor was a Merkur blade and seams to work very nd 1/2well.I cant see other blades working any better,but will let you know.

I was bought this razor by my wife fr Christmas, after realising that the disposable ones were getting more and more expensive, and shaving was become a chore. Having used this razor since I can only say its the finest item in the Bathroom. Shaving is now something I look forward to and enjoy. I cant rate this razor high enough and its made shaving fun again.

As someone that has for years used one of the popular multi-blade razors I was a bit wary of changing to a single blade design. I needn t have worried as the engineering alone on this model means that it is a pleasure to use. The weight and balance of the razor took me a few days to get used to but now I wouldn t be without it. Except at weekends when I never seem to get around to shaving!

I ve been using a Futur for two years now and have never looked back. Solid, well-balanced and gives a far better shave than multi-bladed razors at a much lower cost. Goodbye, razor burn.

The razor was heavier than I expected but it looks great and only took two shaves to get used to it. It looks like something out of a James Bond film! I set it on 3 and just leave it there. I will invest in a good shaving soap and an aftershve balm next to complete the experience. Overall I am very pleased with it.

Tried traditional shaving with a cheap razor and wasn t really impressed. Yes, my shaving rash went but probably because the blade left half my whiskers behind as well. Decided to try a Merkur Futur and was amazed by the difference. A clean shave with a great looking razor. Well worth it!

After seeing so many good reviews and hearing how well my clients in my salon got on with this razor,I decided to give it a go. And its brilliant! Makes shaving a real pleasure and takes it to a new level.

The Futur razor is very well made. Built to last a lifetime. I have found that the Wilkinson Sword blade seem to work better for me than the Merkur blade that came with the razor. It is good to see that very good quality products have not disapeared from our lives

I asked for this razor for Christmas and it has proved a revelation. Although finding the correct setting of blade aggressiveness took one or two shaves, it has now proved its worth. My skin is better with reduced razor burn, bumps and irritation. The weight of the product is also a plus. When you use it, it feels like a bit of serious kit which is well made which in turn breeds confidence. Other reviewers (on other sites) have complained about the handle being slippery. This is something I have not found and I shave in the bath with wet hands and a wet razor handle. Changing blade has also proven relatively easy, even with my short sausage fingers. One slight gripe is shaving just under the nose. I have found I have missed a few hairs due to the razors large head. This has been remedied with a little more care on my part. Overall I have been very impressed. It is my first safety razor and I have found it excellent. I have only given it 4 out of 5 as I have no similar product to compare it too. I would recommend everyone switches to this type of razor as I have had a better, closer, more comfortable shave since Christmas. Also this razor will cost less than multi-blade razors in the long run.
